Most of the countries worldwide are allowing dual citizenship these days as people have spread their wings internationally and set up bases in many countries.<\/p>\n

The migrants from India, especially from the states of Punjab, Haryana, Bihar, and southern states, have a huge impact in this regard. Those who leave India in search of employment end up naturalising themselves in the countries where they reside and work. The India in them will never cease to exist, but unfortunately, as India does not allow dual citizenship, they have to give up their Indian citizenship in case they become citizens of another country.<\/p>\n

Back home, these people have elderly parents, relatives, and ancestral lands. This has been a huge area of concern for the new immigrants. Also, we should try to reach out to people of Indian origin whose parents or great-grandparents were from India and connect them to their roots.<\/p>\n

Does India allow Dual Citizenship?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Indian Constitution does not allow holding the Indian citizenship and citizenship of a foreign country simultaneously. However based on the high level committee of the Indian diaspora, the Government of India decided to grant Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI). As per the Passports Act, 1967, it is mandatory for all Indian passport holders to surrender their passports to the nearest Indian mission or post immediately after acquiring the nationality of another country.<\/p>\n

Hence Section 9 of the Citizenship Act, clearly prohibits Dual citizenship. As per the ministry of external affairs (MEA0 with the MHA, 1.63 lakh persons surrendered their Indian citizenship in 2021 against 85,236 in 2020 and 1.44 lakh in 2019 which is\u00a0 a serious concern. \u00a0According to the reports, over 43% of the 3.92 lakh people who gave up Indian citizenship in the last 3 years (2019-2021) became citizens of the US itself and the rest from across a dozen other counties.<\/p>\n
